Healthy Coffee is not a new concept; it is as old as coffee itself, but new brands of coffee offer a Healthy Coffee saying it is healthier than standard coffee. There are a differing views on what Healthy Coffee is, and what makes coffee healthy in the first place, if it is.. What is Coffee? To understand what Healthy Coffee is, we must know what coffee is. Coffee is a brewed beverage from the roasted seeds from the evergreen shrub of the genus Coffea. There are two (2) main coffee types sold in the world, there are many more of course, but these are the two main coffees sold in the Western World. Arabica from the plant Coffea arabica and Robusta from the plant Coffea canephora. Coffee is slightly acidic having a ph. of 5.0 to 5.1. Coffee also contains caffeine which acts as a mild stimulant to the human body. Coffee is the 2nd most consumed beverage in the world, only second to water, and is the 2nd highest traded commodity only beaten by oil. Is Coffee Healthy? It has been stated by The National Institutes of Health – AARP Diet and Health Study (2012) that moderate coffee consumption correlated negatively with the risk of death. In simple terms this means that people who consume a moderate amount of coffee tended to live longer. However coffee is acidic and the human body is designed to be neutral or mildly alkaline, which is a ph. level of 7.0 or slightly higher. Many of the diseases which disrupt the human body cannot live in an alkaline environment.
